Justice & Equality Committee to resume discussions on Traveller Ethnicity

The Joint Committee on Justice and Equality will continue its discussions on the recognition of Traveller Ethnicity at its meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, 9 November 2016.

Session A: 9 a.m. Pavee Point Traveller & Roma Centre; Minceirs Whiden; and Anastasia Crickley, Chairperson UN Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
Session B: 10 a.m. Dr Robbie McVeigh, Academic

Committee Chairman Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin said: “Tomorrow we will resume our hearings on the issue of Traveller ethnicity. Having a shared history, common cultural tradition and representing a distinct group within larger society, Travellers have campaigned for a long time to be recognised as an ethnic minority. We’re looking forward to getting the perspectives from a range of organisations, activists and experts who have worked to promote an understanding and recognition of Travellers as an ethnic group.”

The meeting will take place at 9am in Committee Room 2, Leinster House, tomorrow, Wednesday, 9 November 2016.
