The Select Committee on Children & Youth Affairs will tomorrow meet with the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Katherine Zappone TD, to consider Committee Stage of the Adoption (Amendment) Bill 2016.

The meeting will commence at 9.00am in Committee Room 2 tomorrow, Wednesday, 16 November 2016.

Committee Chairman, Jim Daly TD, said “This important piece of legislation aims to amend the law in relation to the adoption of children in Ireland. It also makes further provision for the protection of children's rights and enhances the State’s responsibility to take child protection measures. We welcome the opportunity to meet with Minister Zappone and her officials to discuss the provision of this legislation in detail.”

“Among other provisions, it allows married parents to place a child for adoption where both parents consent, amends the criteria under which the High Court can make an adoption order in the case of parental failure and brings forward the right of civil partners and cohabitating couples to adopt.”
