IFA & Economist, Jim Power to brief Agriculture Committee on Brexit

The meeting will focus on the impact of the UK Referendum on membership of the European Union on the Irish agri-foods and fisheries sectors.

Committee Chair, Pat Deering TD, said: “Brexit is undoubtedly the biggest challenge facing the farming industry. Our Committee is keen to ensure that market access to the UK is maintained for Irish farmers and exporters.”

“At tomorrow’s meeting, we will hear from representatives from the Irish Farmers' Association; the Irish Creamery Milk Supplier Association; Macra na Feirme and the Irish Cattle & Sheep Farmers' Association.”

“Later in the meeting, economist, Jim Power will also brief us on the possible implications of Brexit on the farming industry.  The trade exposure to the UK market is still very significant, despite the diversification that has occurred since EU membership. Farmers are concerned about the possibility of punishing tariffs on agri-food products. TTIP is also of great relevance to Irish farmers, particularly in the beef, dairy, pigmeat and poultry sectors, including market access, standards and regulatory convergence.”
