16 Jan 2017, 14:27

Committee will also examine effect of Brexit on agri-food industry

16 January 2017

The Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 17 January at 4pm in Committee Room 1, Leinster House.

The schedule for the meeting is as follows:

i) Scrutiny of EU legislative proposals: Schedule A: COM(2016)698:

ii) Impact of the UK Referendum on membership of the European Union on the Irish agri-food sector; and
Review of the Common Agricultural Policy [Professor Alan Matthews, Department of Economics, Trinity College Dublin]

Committee Chair, Pat Deering TD, said: “Tomorrow we will be asking if – in light of Brexit - the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) remains fit for purpose. It will certainly need to be reviewed, as the UK are currently net contributors to the EU budget. At one of our meetings last year, we were told that Ireland’s share of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) from the EU budget may come under pressure once the UK leaves the EU. Members will be keen to discuss how farmers can be protected from any negative repercussions caused by Brexit.”

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
