Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs Committee to focus on the importance of transport to rural communities

31 Jan 2017, 10:57

The Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural& Gaeltacht Affairs will focus on the importance of transport as it continues its hearings on what it takes to sustain a viable rural community tomorrow, Wednesday, 1 February 2017.

Cathaoirleach of the Committee Peadar Tóibín said: “For rural communities, not only to survive but to grow and develop, it is important that adequate public transport services are in place, particularly for old, young and vulnerable people who have no other means of transport. Public transport plays a vital role in the social fabric of rural Ireland, providing a necessary service, linking remote and dispersed communities and aiding balanced development, promoting social inclusion and halting population decline. Tomorrow, we will meet with representatives from the National Transport Authority, Bus Éireann and Iarnród Éireann to discuss in greater detail the services that are being provided in rural Ireland and examine the ongoing challenges many in rural Ireland face accessing public transport.”

This meeting will start at 2.15pm, tomorrow, Wednesday, 1 February in Committee Room 2, Leinster House. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
