Communications, Climate Change & Environment Committee to discuss impact of Brexit on Energy Market

13 Feb 2017, 12:34

The impact of Brexit on the Irish energy market will be on the agenda of the Joint Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment when it meets tomorrow, Tuesday, 14 February 2017.

Committee Chair Hildegarde Naughton TD said: “Ireland and the UK are now part of an increasingly interdependent and integrated European energy market, particularly in the areas of gas and electricity generation and supply. The Single Electricity Market is the wholesale electricity market for the island of Ireland, regulated jointly by the Commission for Energy Regulation and its counterpart in Northern Ireland, the Utility Regulator. By combining what were two separate jurisdictional electricity markets, the SEM became one of the first of its kind in Europe when it went live on 1 November 2007. EU legislation is committed to driving the coming together of energy markets across Europe with the aim of creating a fully liberalised internal electricity market. Tomorrow, we will meet with officials from the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment to discuss the impact of proposed withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU on the energy market in Ireland, particularly in the harmonisation of energy markets, security of supply, regulation, energy policy and climate change policy.”

Before it discusses the energy market, the Committee will carry out further Scrutiny of EU legislative proposals re The \"Clean Energy for all Europeans\" package:
