The Joint Committee on Health will tomorrow meet with the Minister for Health, Simon Harris TD and Mr. Tony O’Brien, Director General of the Health Service Executive to consider the quarterly update on issues within the health service.

The meeting will commence at 1.30pm in Committee Room 3 tomorrow, Wednesday, 22 February 2017.

Committee Chairman, Dr. Michael Harty TD, said “This quarterly update is an important opportunity for Committee Members to be briefed on issues within the Health service by the Minister and the Director General of the HSE. It is also an opportunity to further carry out our function of observing and scrutinising the work of the Department of Health and the HSE.”

“As we know, winter time routinely increases pressure on our health service but 2017 saw numbers waiting on a hospital bed reach record highs. We welcome the opportunity to hear from Minster Harris and Mr. O’Brien on, among a broad range of issues, why this was, why demand surpassed capacity to this degree and what measures have been introduced in order to ensure that capacity is dynamic enough in the future to meet demand.”

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
