PAC corrects the record in relation to Garda Statement of Internal Financial Control

11 May 2017, 16:08

The Public Accounts Committee today, Thursday, 11 May, corrected the record in relation to when the Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan, as Accounting Officer, signed the statement of internal financial controls which accompanied the 2015 accounts for An Garda Síochána.

This correction follows a statement to the Committee this afternoon by the Comptroller and Auditor General, Mr Seamus McCarthy. Mr McCarthy apologised for an oversight which led to the Garda’s Statement of Financial Control being published by his office with an incorrect date attributed to Nóirín O’Sullivan.

The Chairman of the PAC, Deputy Seán Fleming stated: “Remarks I made at this morning’s meeting in relation to the dates on the Statement of Financial Control were based on the published documents which I relied on in good faith. The statement by the C&AG corrects the issue in relation to the actual date that should have been on this document. I fully accept that any implications drawn regarding these were erroneous and that there was no attempt by the Garda Commissioner to mislead the Committee or public in relation to this matter. I welcome the correction by the C&AG and regret any misunderstanding caused.”
