Turf Club to brief Agriculture Committee on anti-doping strategy

29 May 2017, 12:17

The Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 30 May at 3pm in Committee Room 1, Leinster House.

The agenda for the meeting is as follows:

(i) Pre-legislative scrutiny on the General Scheme of the Greyhound Industry Bill 2017 [Representatives from the Irish Greyhound Board / Bord na gCon]; and

(ii) Anti-doping strategy of the Irish Thoroughbred industry [Representatives from the Turf Club]
Committee Chair, Pat Deering TD, said today: “The  Irish  Thoroughbred  horse  racing  and  breeding  industry  is  worth more than €1 billion  annually  to  the  Irish  economy. Preventing doping in horse racing is something that we must remain vigilant about in the fight against illegal performance-enhancing drugs. Tomorrow the Turf Club will update us on the work of the Anti-Doping Taskforce and discuss issues around their calls for increased testing and improved laboratory facilities. The anti-doping strategy used by the Irish thoroughbred industry will be assessed in terms of how it may inform the Committee in its continued Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of the General Scheme of the Greyhound Industry Bill 2017.”

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
