Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs continues hearings on sustaining rural communities

20 Jun 2017, 11:47

The Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs will continue its hearings on sustaining viable rural communities tomorrow, Wednesday, 21 June 2017.

Cathaoirleach of the Committee Peadar Tóibín said: “Tomorrow we will discuss the work of the Western Development Commission in sustaining viable rural communities when we will hear from Paddy McGuiness, former Chairman, Western Development Commission. Set up in the late 1990s, the Western Development Commission (WDC) was a government response to intense public pressure to help tackle the massive population decline the Western Region of Ireland had endured over many years. It promotes both social and economic development in Ireland’s western region, taking in the counties Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Mayo, Galway and Clare. We will be particularly interested in discussing the work of the WDC and in getting the perspectives of Mr McGuinness on the particular measures he feels are necessary to develop, strengthen and grow their communities.”

This meeting will start at 2.15pm, tomorrow, Wednesday, 21 June, 2017 in Committee Room 4, Leinster House. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
