Dáil to mark anniversary of Srebrenica massacre

11 Jul 2017, 10:50

The Dáil will today mark the 22nd anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre by allocating 40 minutes of debate to it in the day’s business.

Ceann Comhairle, Seán Ó’Fearghaíl TD, brought a proposal to allocate time to this issue to the Dáil Business Committee last week, which was subsequently agreed.

Speaking ahead of the debate, the Ceann Comhairle said, “Today the Dáil will mark the anniversary of the mass killing of thousands of Muslims by Bosnian Serb forces during the Yugoslavian civil war. The genocide that took place in Srebrenica will be remembered as one of the worst atrocities to ever take place in Europe. Today, the Dáil will remember those innocent victims by facilitating time on the floor of the parliament to discussing the killings. The anniversary will also be marked by a motion in the Seanad at 4.45pm. As Ceann Comhairle, I have invited members of the Remembering Srebrenica organisation to attend the debate this afternoon.”

The debate will commence in the Dáil at 6.05pm.
