Communications Climate Action & Environment Committee concludes scrutiny of waste tyres regulation

24 Oct 2017, 16:33

The Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment today concluded its scrutiny of SI No. 400 of 2017 Waste Management (Tyres and Waste Tyres) Regulations which was laid before both Houses of the Oireachtas on 15 September 2017.

Committee Chair Hildegarde Naughton said: “Earlier this month, the Committee examined the regulations in greater detail and heard from a number of State bodies, representative organisations and stakeholders, including the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment; the Environmental Protection Agency; Repak ELT; Protecting Uplands & Rural Environments; Producer Register Limited; Independent Tyre Wholesalers and Retailers Association; Irish Tyre Industry Association; Irish Road Haulage Association; Irish Farmers Association; and the Association for Retail Tyre Standards.

Having heard this evidence and having considered written submissions from several other organisations, the joint committee decided that it would not object to the Statutory Instrument remaining in force. The committee is concerned that the disposal of waste tyres should be handled in an environmentally friendly and cost efficient manner. The committee also decided that it would review the operations of the SI in seven months’ time, when the six months operational data becomes available.”
