Business, Enterprise & Innovation Committee to discuss threats to attracting FDI

The Joint Committee on Business, Enterprise and Innovation will meet tomorrow at 5pm in CR2, Leinster House.

The meeting will focus on direct threats to attracting Irish Foreign Direct Investment and jobs growth. Heather Humphreys, the new Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, will attend at the Joint Committee meeting along with Mr Martin Shanahan CEO and representatives from the IDA.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Chair, Mary Butler TD, said today, “Ireland has generally done well in terms of attracting and retaining global FDI. However, we cannot afford to become complacent and there is no doubt that Brexit threatens our ability to attract new investment. Another issue affecting FDI is the serious lack of housing availability and issues with the planning process. If Ireland cannot offer something as basic as enough accommodation for foreign workers, companies may well go elsewhere. Winning and holding onto FDI are vital if we are to continue to flourish economically in these uncertain times.”

At 7pm, the Select Committee will sit to discuss 2017 Supplementary Estimates for Public Services - Vote 32 (Business, Enterprise and Innovation).

Heather Humphreys T.D., Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation; Pat Breen, T.D., Minister of State for Trade, Employment, Business, EU Digital Single Market and Data Protection and; John Halligan, T.D., Minister of State for Training, Skills, Innovation, Research and Development will attend at Select Committee.
