Ambassador to outline Bulgaria’s priorities for the Presidency of the Council of Europe

16 Jan 2018, 16:29

The Bulgarian Ambassador will appear before the Joint Committee on EU Affairs when it meets tomorrow at 2pm in Committee Room 1, Leinster House.

His Excellency, Mr Branimir Zaimov, Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria to Ireland, will detail the priorities of the Republic of Bulgaria for the Presidency of the Council of the EU.

Speaking in advance of the meeting, Committee Chair, Michael Healy-Rae TD said, “Bulgaria takes over the rotating Presidency at a time when solidarity between the Member States is of paramount importance for the future of the EU. The Bulgarian Presidency will focus particularly on the European perspective and connectivity of the Western Balkins. According to Eurostat, in 2017, Bulgaria was the Member State with the lowest per-capita GDP, at 51 % below the EU average. As such, assuming the Presidency is a valuable opportunity for Bulgaria to communicate its aim of fostering stability in the western Balkans. The Committee welcomes this opportunity to engage directly with the Ambassador on Bulgaria’s goals and objectives for its time at the helm.”
