Culture, Heritage & Gaeltacht Committee to discuss governance issues in arts sector

16 Jan 2018, 10:44

Governance in relation to funding in the arts sector will be on the agenda of the Committee on Culture, Heritage & Gaeltacht when it meets with officials from the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and representatives from the Arts Council tomorrow, 17 January 2018.

Cathaoirleach of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Peadar Tóibín TD, said: “A substantial amount of public money is distributed to arts organisations annually. As is the case with all public money, this money should be subject to a standard of governance that complies with best practice in terms of effectiveness, oversight and accountability.   It is also important that arts organisations adhere to acceptable standards by arts organisations in relation to such broader matters as employment and welfare within the sector. This is necessary to maintain confidence in the spending of public money in the arts sector. Tomorrow we will discuss governance in relation to funding in the arts sector in greater detail with officials from the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht (including Creative Ireland) and representatives from the Arts Council.

This meeting will start at 1.30pm, tomorrow, 17 January 2018 in Committee Room 4, Leinster House. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
