Health Committee to commence PLS on General Scheme of the Assisted Human Reproduction Bill 2017

16 Jan 2018, 12:51

The Joint Committee on Health will meet at 9am in CR3 tomorrow.

The Committee will begin Pre-Legislative Scrutiny on the General Scheme of the Assisted Human Reproduction Bill 2017. Officials from the Department of Health and Representatives from the Health Service Executive (HSE) will appear before the Committee
Chairperson of the Health Committee, Dr Michael Harty TD said today, “Pre-Legislative Scrutiny is a powerful part of the legislative process, as it allows committees to scrutinise draft legislation and report back to government before a final version of the bill has been drafted. The draft bill we will look at tomorrow is a significant one; Assisted Human Reproduction (AHR) is becoming increasingly important in Ireland and measures must be put in place to protect parents, donors, surrogates and crucially, the children born through AHR. The department and the HSE will brief the Committee on the key elements of the bill, including the proposed establishment of the Assisted Human Reproduction Regulatory Authority as a dedicated, independent body to oversee this sector.”
Prior to this, the Committee will conduct Scrutiny of EU legislative proposal: Schedule B: COM(2017)735.
