Justice & Equality Committee to discuss opt-in motion in relation to European Union Directive 2013/33/EU

16 Jan 2018, 14:28

The Joint Committee on Justice and Equality will discuss an opt-in motion in relation to the European Union Directive 2013/33/EU laying down standards for the reception of applicants for international protection at its meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, 17 January 2018.

Committee Chairman Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin said: “Under the Directive, asylum seekers who have not received a first instance determination of their case within nine months from making their application will have a right to work, become self-employed or access training until such time as their application for protection reaches a conclusion. The opt-in is a response to a Supreme Court judgement from May 30 last year  which found that the ban on asylum-seekers seeking employment in Ireland is contrary to the constitutional right to seek employment. Tomorrow we will discuss the issue with the Minister for Justice and Equality Charlie Flanagan TD.”

The meeting will take place at 9am in Committee Room 2, Leinster House, tomorrow, Wednesday, 17 January 2018.

At 9.45am, the Select Committee on Justice and Equality will resume Committee Stage of the Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017. Appearing before the Committee will be: Minister for Justice and Equality, Charlie Flanagan, TD.

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
