22 Jan 2018, 11:03

The Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment will continue its hearings on the Waste Reduction Bill 2017 [PMB] and meeting Ireland’s targets under the 2020 Climate & Energy Package at its meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, 23 January 2018.

The schedule for the meeting is:

Session A - Detailed Scrutiny of Waste Reduction Bill 2017 [PMB] [Deputies Eamon Ryan and Catherine Martin, Bill sponsors] [Representatives from Convenience Stores and Newsagents Association]
Session B - Meeting Ireland’s targets under the 2020 Climate & Energy Package [Officials from the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment and representatives from National Offshore Wind Association; SSE Ireland; Tipperary Energy Agency]

Committee Chair Hildegarde Naughton said: “Tomorrow we will resume our detailed scrutiny of the Waste Reduction Bill 2017. The purpose of the Bill is to provide for a ban on single-use non-compostable cups and other tableware and for the introduction of deposit and return schemes for beverage containers when we will hear from representatives from the Convenience Stores and Newsagents Association. In the second part of our meeting, we will continue our hearings on meeting Ireland’s targets under the 2020 Climate & Energy Package. Our target is to achieve 20% lower than the 2005 greenhouse gas emissions levels by 2020. We have already heard from a number of State agencies and stakeholder organisations to get their perspectives on the issue. Tomorrow we will meet with officials from the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment and representatives from National Offshore Wind Association; SSE Ireland; and Tipperary Energy Agency to discuss the current situation regarding our targets and consider the measures that may have to be implemented to accelerate efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency and promote the use of renewable energy.”

This meeting will start at 11am, tomorrow, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 in Committee Room 4, Leinster House. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here and can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
