Communications Climate Action & Environment Committee to resume hearings on 2020 energy efficiency targets

26 Feb 2018, 11:58

Meeting Ireland’s targets under the 2020 Climate & Energy Package will be the focus of the Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment at its meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, 27 February 2018.

The schedule for the meeting is:

(i) Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals: Schedule B: COM(2016)52; COM(2017)51.

(ii) Meeting Ireland’s targets under the 2020 Climate & Energy Package - specifically in relation to bioenergy and its role in meeting Ireland’s targets [Officials from the Department of Communications, Climate Action and The Environment and Representatives from Gas Networks Ireland, Irish BioEnergy Association, Renewable Energy Consumers and Producers, Renewable Gas Forum Ireland].

Committee Chair Hildegarde Naughton said: “Tomorrow, we will continue our discussion on Ireland's progress on meeting Climate Action Targets. Ireland has a target to achieve 20% lower than the 2005 greenhouse gas emissions levels by 2020. While significant progress has been made in recent years, there is still a risk that we will not meet our targets. The Committee has already heard from representatives of the solar and wind energy sectors. Bioenergy resources could also play an important role as part of plans to decarbonise Ireland’s energy use. Tomorrow we will meet with officials from the Department of Communications, Climate Action and the Environment and representatives from a number of stakeholder organisations to consider the current situation regarding our targets particularly in relation to bioenergy and its role in meeting our targets.”

This meeting will start at 3pm, tomorrow, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 in Committee Room 2, Leinster House. You can watch proceedings here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
