Ireland’s corporate tax in focus as UCC economist Coffey addresses Budgetary Oversight Committee

15 May 2018, 15:11

Seamus Coffey, a University College Cork economist who has written extensively on the global challenges to Ireland’s corporate tax policies, will discuss the topic Wednesday when he testifies to the Select Committee on Budgetary Oversight.

Mr. Coffey is chairman of the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council, an independent body that casts a forensic eye over government budgets and fiscal policy. He is addressing the Committee in a personal capacity.

His testimony is expected to begin shortly after 2 p.m. in Committee Room 2, Leinster House.

The Committee led by Chairman Colm Brophy TD is exploring whether Ireland's policy on corporation tax merits any change in Budget 2019 and is sustainable in the medium term.

"The lowering of U.S. corporate tax rates and planned introduction of a new minimum tax liability on multinationals' overseas profits raises questions for Ireland, home to some 700 American companies,” Deputy Brophy said. “Ireland’s corporate tax regime also faces challenges from European Union tax harmonisation proposals.

"As part of the Committee's advance scrutiny of Budget 2019, we look forward to gathering Mr. Coffey's thoughts on tax policy and Ireland’s most prudent path through this changing landscape.”
