Traffic congestion in the Greater Dublin Area will be on the agenda of the Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport at its meeting on Wednesday, 16 May 2018.

Appearing before the Committee to consider the issue are:

Hugh Creegan, Deputy CEO & Tim Gaston, Director of Public Transport Services, National Transport Authority
Michael Nolan, CEO, Transport Infrastructure Ireland

Committee Chairman Fergus O’Dowd said: “Traffic congestion is more than just an inconvenience or a source of frustration for commuters, businesses and service providers. Time lost due to aggravated traffic congestion in the greater Dublin area is costing the economy €350 million per year with the amount set to rise to €2 billion by 2033, according to a research project undertaken by the Department of Transport’s Economic and Financial Evaluation Unit which was carried out in conjunction with the National Transport Authority, Transport Infrastructure Ireland and Dublin City Council. At our meeting on Wednesday we will meet with both the Deputy Chief Executive and the Director of Public Transport Services of the National Transport Authority and the Chief Executive of Transport Infrastructure Ireland to examine the scale of the problem and consider initiatives that should be taken to tackle congestion in the short to medium term including infrastructure construction and increased public transport investment.”

The Committee will start at 9.30am in Committee Room 4, Leinster House. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
