Committee on Budgetary Oversight to discuss European Commission’s Country Report Ireland 2019

11 Mar 2019, 10:46

On Wednesday, March 13, at 1:30 p.m., the Committee on Budgetary Oversight will meet European Commission representatives to consider the Commission’s new Country Report Ireland 2019 as part of the European Semester process.

Scheduled witnesses include Carlos Martinez-Mongay, deputy director general of the Economic and Finance Division of the European Commission.

Each year, the EU ensures that member states are complying with EU economic policy recommendations before national budgets are adopted. This process is known as the European Semester.

“The Country Report contains perspective that merits detailed consideration,” said Committee Chairman Colm Brophy TD. “It includes a fresh assessment of Irish economic and fiscal performance, surveys Ireland’s delivery of the European Commission’s 2018 country-specific recommendations, and highlights areas of concern.

“Given the influence of the European Semester on the national budget, it is important that the Oireachtas is consulted and can scrutinise the process,” Deputy Brophy said. “Our Committee looks forward to engaging with the Commission on its Country Report ahead of the Finance Minister’s submission to the Commission, in late April, of the Stability Programme Update.”

The meeting in Committee Room 2 can be viewed live here.
