Ceann Comhairle of Dáil Éireann, Seán Ó Fearghaíl TD, has expressed his condolences to the family and friends of Lyra McKee as he attended her funeral service in Belfast.

Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl said: “I am here today in Belfast on behalf of the Houses of the Oireachtas to demonstrate our parliamentary support for the family and friends of Lyra McKee, and show our deep respect for the work of Lyra and all who work in her profession. The loss of her life was tragic; we want to express our sympathy.

“It is important now more than ever that the fragile peace process is nourished. It is incumbent upon us all to build upon and safeguard the peace which the Good Friday Agreement delivered. It would be a fitting legacy to the life of Lyra if communities can build upon the foundation of peace which the Good Friday Agreement delivered.”
