Joint Committee on Public Petitions to consider a range of petitions including a petition on raising the age limit for joining the Defence Forces

24 Sep 2019, 15:24

The Joint Committee on Public Petitions will meet tomorrow (Wednesday) to consider a range of petitions including a petition to raise the upper age limit for recruitment to the Defence Forces.

The meeting at 1.30pm in Committee Room 1, Leinster House, will also examine petitions regarding the withdrawal of a notice of intention to grant a petroleum licence; the removal of paper receipts for all card transactions by 2022; a request for the Defence Forces to take responsibility for building all public infrastructure in Ireland; and a call for legislation to legalise the chemical, N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), which occurs naturally in plants and animals, and can be consumed as a psychedelic drug.
Committee chairman, Seán Sherlock TD said: “The Committee’s role is to give members of the public the opportunity to place issues of concern directly before the Oireachtas and to influence changes in public policy where appropriate. We will give these petitions our full consideration before announcing, in public session, the decision on each one.”
The meeting in Committee Room 1 can be viewed live here.
Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
