21 Oct 2019, 16:01

The Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and Marine will meet tomorrow (Tuesday) at 3.30pm in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House to hear an update on Harnessing Ireland’s Ocean Wealth – An Integrated Marine Plan for Ireland.

Deputies and Senators will hear from representatives of the Department of the Taoiseach, the Marine Institute, Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine, and the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government on behalf of the Marine Coordination Group, which is tasked with implementing the plan.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Chairman Pat Deering TD said: “Our seas and oceans are a vital national resource and a key sector for our economy in terms of seafood production, shipping and maritime commerce, and marine-related tourism. Last year Ireland’s ocean economy had a turnover in the region of €6.2 billion and employed more than 34,000 people. Members look forward to hearing an update from the representatives of Marine Coordination Group on the implementation of Harnessing Ireland’s Ocean Wealth and meeting the targets set out in the plan.”

The meeting in Committee Room 1 can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
