Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine to meet with Bord na gCon for update on animal welfare issues in greyhound industry

11 Nov 2019, 16:11

The Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine will meet tomorrow (Tuesday) at 3.30pm in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House to hear an update on issues concerning the greyhound industry from representatives of Bord na gCon, the Irish Greyhound Board.

The Chairman of Bord na gCon, Mr Frank Nyhan, will brief the Committee on the Board’s activities in relation to the care and welfare of racing greyhounds. He will be accompanied by Chief Executive Officer, Gerrard Dollard; Veterinary Director, Denis Healy; and Head of Regulation, Pat Herbert.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Chairman Pat Deering TD said: “Very serious issues regarding the greyhound industry, and in particular the welfare of dogs no longer racing, were raised over the summer. Members of this Committee and the public in general were distressed to hear the allegations of mistreatment of greyhounds by some involved in this industry, which is in receipt of significant funding from taxpayers. Following on from our previous engagement on the matter with Bord na gCon representatives in July, we wish to hear how the Greyhound Board is tackling these problems and what it is doing to protect and maintain animal welfare across the greyhound industry.”
