Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community to discuss Traveller employment

9 Dec 2019, 15:20

The Joint Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community will discuss Traveller employment at a meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, in Leinster House, Committee Room 1 at 11am.

Representatives from Pavee Point, Minceir Whiden, St Stephen’s Green Trust, Involve and Shuttle Knit will attend the meeting with TDs and Senators.

Speaking before the meeting, Committee Chair, Senator Colette Kelleher said: “Census 2016 showed an unemployment rate of 80 per cent for Travellers compared with 13 per cent for the general population.  And according to the National Traveller Survey 2017, 43 per cent of Travellers experienced discrimination when accessing employment and only 1 in 10 non-Travellers said they would employ a Traveller.

“Tomorrow we will be exploring the reality behind these figures for Travellers when it comes to accessing work and current projects and supports in place to support Travellers in the labour market.”
