Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl TD raises important issues at meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Ireland

Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl TD today met virtually with the Chinese Ambassador to Ireland, Mr. He Xiangdong, during which a range of important issues were discussed.

These included the positive economic relations between Ireland and China; international media reports around human rights issues in Xinjiang; the Ireland China Parliamentary Friendship Group; and, the ongoing case of Mr. Richard O’Halloran.

Speaking after the meeting, the Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl TD said “I am pleased that my first meeting of 2021 with Ambassador He Xiangdong provided the opportunity to discuss a range of important issues including the many positive aspects of the economic and cultural relationship between our two countries.

We also discussed, in a frank manner, the concerns of the Irish people regarding reported issues of human rights in Xinjiang Province.

The ongoing situation regarding the exit ban on Richard O’Halloran was also discussed. Ambassador He Xiangdong has assured me that every effort possible is being made between our two Governments to bring about a resolution which will result in the safe return home of Mr. O’Halloran."
