The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will resume its examination of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) at a meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, 13 April in Leinster House at 9.30am.
Suzanne Drisdelle, Chargé d’Affaires of the Canadian Embassy in Ireland; Reuben East, Trade and Economic Counsellor at Canada’s Mission to the EU; and Chris Collenette, Chair of the Ireland Canada Business Association will appear before the Committee of TDs and Senators virtually for the discussion.
It is the Committee’s third meeting, in a series, focused on the proposed EU-Canada trade deal CETA. The proposed deal must be ratified by each EU Member State. Canada has already ratified the agreement and it has been approved by the European Council and European Parliament. Substantial parts of the deal have been provisionally applied since September 2017.
Committee Chairman Joe McHugh TD said: “Ireland and Canada enjoy a strong relationship with growing trade between the two countries and deep historical and cultural links.
“Tomorrow’s engagement is a welcome opportunity for the Committee to explore these links further and to discuss the current and projected impact of CETA on Irish-Canadian trade and relations.
“The Committee looks forward to hearing and exploring the position and views of the Ireland Canada Business Association and the Canadian Embassy in Ireland on CETA during the meeting.”
