Seanad Committee to discuss post-Brexit relationship between Ireland and the United Kingdom

19 Apr 2021, 07:00

The Seanad Special Select Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union will meet this afternoon to discuss the future relationship between Ireland and the United Kingdom and its implications.

The Committee of Senators will meet at 3pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House with Dáithí O’Ceallaigh, Chair of the IIEA UK Group, The Institute of International and European Affairs, to consider an analysis of the latest developments in Brexit and their impact on Ireland.

Speaking ahead of Monday’s meeting, Committee Chair Senator Lisa Chambers said: “The relationship between Ireland and Britain is one of the most important for both countries, in terms of our trade, cultural and family links. We also have a shared interest in preserving peace and good relations in Northern Ireland, on the island of Ireland and between our two islands, and in upholding the Good Friday Agreement and ensuring it is implemented in full.

“Given the upheavals caused by Brexit, it is critical that Ireland and the UK build a new, strong relationship between the two governments to overcome the difficulties we currently face, particularly given events in the North over recent weeks. As Ireland’s former Ambassador to the UK, Mr O’Ceallaigh brings valuable experience and insights to the table, and the Committee looks forward to hearing his views on how Ireland and the UK can build a new, post-Brexit relationship and strengthen ties in the years ahead.”

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
