EU Affairs Committee to discuss Ireland and the EU 2021 opinion poll

18 May 2021, 14:48

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will discuss Ireland and the EU 2021 opinion poll results with European Movement Ireland chief executive officer, Noelle O’Connell at a meeting in Leinster House, tomorrow, Wednesday 19 May at 9.30am.

The meeting will take place virtually from Committee Room 4.
Cathaoirleach of the Committee Joe McHugh TD said: “Europe has experienced significant change in the past year with Brexit and COVID-19 presenting new and unprecedented challenges. The Ireland and the EU 2021 poll results offer an important insight into the views of citizens who were most impacted by these challenges.
"For example, it reveals strong support for EU membership as more than eight out of ten people (84 per cent) agreed that Ireland should remain a member of the EU. Yet only about half of respondents (53 per cent) agreed that the EU is moving in the right direction. Furthermore, only about half agreed they had confidence in the EU’s Covid-19 vaccine strategy and about half disagreed with giving the EU more control over health policy.
“The Committee welcomes this engagement with Noelle O’Connell to hear more about the poll and discuss and explore its findings in detail.”
The poll was conducted during March this year among a representative sample of 1,003 people aged 18 and over from across the country.
