Agriculture Committee discuss Sale and Supply of Pets & Animal Welfare

31 May 2021, 16:36

The Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food, and the Marine will discuss the regulation of the sale and supply of pets and animal welfare at tomorrow’s meeting, 3:30 pm, Tuesday 1 Jun.

The meeting will be split into two sessions:

  • Session 1: (15:30 - 16:30) Representatives from Dogs Trust CLG
  • Session 2: (16:30 - 17:30) Representatives from Horse Care Ireland

The meeting at 3:30 pm will be broadcast from Committee Room 3 of Leinster House.

Speaking in advance of the meeting, Cathaoirleach, Jackie Cahill TD, said: “We are all horrified when we see horrific images and videos of animal cruelty, and they can be extremely distressing to watch. The law around animal cruelty and welfare need to be robust enough to ensure that the resources are in place to effectively monitor and protect the welfare of animals right across Ireland.”

The Cathaoirleach added: “The Committee and I look forward to hearing from Dogs Trust and Horse Care Ireland, listening to their concerns and challenges and exploring what we need to do to assist organisations like these and animal welfare in general.”

The Joint Committee on Agriculture and the Marine has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
