31 May 2021, 15:53

The Joint Committee on Key issues affecting the Traveller Community will discuss access to housing and accommodation, including culturally appropriate accommodation with ‘The Irish Traveller Movement’,  the ‘National Traveller Women’s Forum’, and the ‘Pavee Point Traveller and Roma Centre’ at tomorrow’s meeting, 12:30 pm, Tuesday 1 June.

The Irish Traveller Movement, Ms Rose Marie Maughan and Ms Emily Murtagh, National Accommodation Policy Officers; National Traveller Women’s Forum, Ms Bridget Kelly, Community Development Worker and Ms Maria Joyce, Coordinator; and Pavee Point Traveller and Roma Centre, Mr Martin Collins, Co-Director will appear before the Committee for the discussion.

The meeting at 12:30 pm will be broadcast from Committee Room 4 of Leinster House.

Cathaoirleach of the Committee Senator Eileen Flynn said: “The Committee and I look forward to our discussion around the issues of Traveller Housing and Accommodation with ‘The Traveller Movement’, the ‘National Traveller Women’s Forum’, and ‘Pavee Point Traveller and Roma Centre’ today.”

The Cathaoirleach added: “Housing and accommodation, and especially culturally appropriate, Traveller specific accommodation is an extremely important topic for this Committee and is one of the key issues affecting the Traveller Community the Committee prioritised when the Committee was formed. Availability and access to housing and accommodation; facilities and services within culturally appropriate accommodation; and high levels of homelessness within the Traveller Community are just some of the topics we hope to explore. I look forward to an interesting conversation tomorrow around these issues and wider topics with the representatives.”

The Joint Committee on Key issues affecting the Traveller Community has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
