Health Committee to get update from Health Minister on new national maternity hospital

13 Jul 2021, 17:06

The Joint Committee on Health will meet Health Minister Stephen Donnelly tomorrow, Wednesday, 14 July for an update on the new national maternity hospital.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 2, with the Minister scheduled to appear virtually by video link at 9.30am.

Speaking before the meeting Committee Cathaoirleach Seán Crowe TD said: “Ownership of the site of the proposed new national maternity hospital at St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin is the source of ongoing debate and controversy. There are genuine concerns about the independence and clinical autonomy of the proposed hospital when the land is owned by a religious order.

“The Committee welcomes this engagement with Minister Donnelly to discuss ownership of the site, the possibility of the State buying the land, the possibility of moving the project to another location and assurances if possible that the hospital if built on the current proposed site will be able to act independently and offer all legal procedures currently available to women when the site is not State owned.”
