21 Sep 2021, 14:49

The Joint Committee on Health will meet representatives of Mental Health Reform and Mental Health Ireland to discuss significant need for investment in mental health services at a meeting in in Leinster House, tomorrow, Wednesday, 22 September.

The Committee will also discuss the increased need for service provision as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mental Health Reform’s CEO Fiona Coyle, Policy and Advocacy Coordinator Ber Grogan and Mental Health Ireland’s Director of Policy and Research Dr Fiona Keogh will appear virtually for the meeting in Committee Room 2 at 9.30am.

Health Committee Cathaoirleach Seán Crowe TD said: “As restrictions are eased and we return to a new normal it is important that no one is left behind. It is essential that the reported surge in mental health problems is discussed and plans to provide the necessary additional supports and services are put in place and delivered on to meet people’s needs.

“Both Mental Health Ireland and Mental Health Reform are extremely well placed to update both the Joint Committee on Health and the Sub-Committee on Mental Health on the investment needed for mental health care,  and the increased demand for services being reported as a result of Covid-19 and the pandemic response.”

Mental Health Reform is a national coalition on mental health with more than 75 member organisations and thousands of individual supports.

Mental Health Ireland promotes positive mental health and wellbeing for all individuals and communities and supports people with lived experience of mental health challenges in their recovery.
