Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action to begin pre-legislative scrutiny General Scheme of Circular Economy Bill

The Committee will be briefed on the Heads of the Bill by officials from the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Brian Leddin said: “The current global economy is based on a linear model of production and consumption, a model which is economically and environmentally unsustainable. The circular economy offers an alternative, where waste and resource use can be minimised. When a product has reached the end of its life, its parts can then be used again and again to create further useful products.

“The Waste Action Plan for a Circular Economy was published in September 2020 and mandates a whole-of-government approach to ensure Ireland’s successful transition to a circular economy. The Circular Economy Bill 2021 is a key step in this transition and proposes the necessary legislative basis for several key measures, including the Circular Economy Strategy and the Circular Economy Programme. The Committee looks forward to discuss the Head of the Bill with the Department officials.”

The Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
