Good Friday Committee to receive update from the Shared Island Unit

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will receive an update from representatives of the Shared Island Unit at a meeting on Thursday 04 November in Leinster House, Committee Room 1 at 13.30.

The Committee considers issues arising from Ireland’s role as signatory to the Good Friday Agreement and ongoing developments in the implementation of the agreement  

Officials from the Department of An Taoiseach; Aingeal O’Donoghue, Assisistant Secretary and Eoghan Duffy, Principal Officer will give TDs and Senators an update on the work of the Share Island Unit.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Fergus O’Dowd said: “The Committee welcomes the opportunity to hear from representatives of the Shared Island Unit and the progress the Unit has made in achieving its objectives and priorities since it was established one year ago. This committee meets an important time as we continue to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic and navigate the post Brexit landscape. Strengthening the economic, political and social links on the island and the promotion of all island approaches to challenges facing Ireland, North and South is a key objective for the Unit and we look forward to hearing their insights.”

The Shared Island Unit was launched in October 2020 by Taoiseach Micheál Martin.

The Government’s commitment of €500 million to the Shared Island Fund provides multi-annual capital funding for investment on a strategic basis in collaborative North/South projects that will support the commitments and objectives of the Good Friday Agreement.
