Disability Committee to hear from Irish Heart Foundation and stroke survivors

10 Nov 2021, 15:18

The Joint Committee on Disability Matters will discuss aligning disability services with the UNCRPD – in consideration of acquired disability when it meets tomorrow, Thursday, 11 November 2021. The Committee will meet at 9:45 am in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House.

The UNCRPD is a landmark Convention which simply seeks to ensure that people with disabilities can enjoy the same human rights as everyone else.

This calls for a step-change across all sectors of society from a medial model of disability to a social and rights-based model of care, which ensures the inclusion of all groups of people with disabilities across our communities.

The Committee will meet with representatives from the Irish Heart Foundation, Chris Macey, Head of Advocacy and Patient Support. The committee will also hear from Mary Farrell in relation to Acquired Brain Injury and related matters such as the deficits in appropriate ABI services.

“This is the third in a series of meetings covering the topic of ‘Aligning Disability Services with the UNCRPD. This meeting will hear about the impact of acquired heart or neurological conditions on individuals and we will discuss the availability or services for people with these conditions. The Committee looks forward to discussing these topics and the wider debate with our guests.”

“Stroke is Ireland’s third biggest killer and the biggest cause of acquired disability. Several thousand people experience a stroke each year and end up requiring disability services and care. We look forward to discussing how treatment of people with acquired disabilities aligns with the UNCPRD in order for them to participate fully in society.”

The meeting in Committee Room 4 can be viewed live on the Oireachtas website.

The Joint Committee on Disability Matters has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad. More information can be found on the dedicated Committee Webpage.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
