22 Feb 2022, 17:10

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will meet tomorrow, Wednesday February 23rd to discuss European Year of Youth 2022 with representatives from Eurofound, the National Youth Council of Ireland and Léargas.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House between 9:30am – 12:30pm.

The following representatives are due to address the meeting:

  • Ivailo Kalfin, Executive Director - Eurofound
  • Loraine Gilligan, Executive Director  - Léargas
  • Mark McNulty, Youth Representative to the European Youth Forum - National Youth Council of Ireland

The European Commission will coordinate throughout 2022 a range of activities in close contact with the European Parliament, the Member States, regional and local authorities, youth organisations and young people themselves.

The initiatives being developed under the European Year of Youth will be supported by €8 million in funding so that young Europeans will benefit from opportunities to gain knowledge, skills, and competencies for their professional development, and to strengthen their civic engagement to shape Europe's future.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Joe McHugh said: “The EU Commission made a formal proposal last year to make 2022 the European Year of Youth in order to encourage greater inclusion and participation from young people to drive forward Europe’s future.”

“The past two years have been very difficult for young people and their voices have not always been heard. The Committee looks forward to hearing in particular from Mark McNulty, who is the National Youth Council’s representative to the European Youth Forum for his views as a young person on the future of Europe.”
