Committee of Public Accounts to examine 2020 Financial Statements with Residential Tenancies Board

23 Feb 2022, 17:00

The Committee of Public Accounts (PAC) will meet tomorrow, Thursday, 24 February, with representatives of the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) to examine its Financial Statements 2020.

The meeting at 9.30am in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will be joined by the C&AG, Seamus McCarthy.

The afternoon session, beginning at 1.30pm, will consider the minutes of last week’s meeting, correspondence and other business of the Committee.

PAC Cathaoirleach Deputy Brian Stanley said: “The RTB’s main functions are to maintain a register of private residential tenancies, tenancies of Approved Housing Body and student-specific accommodation, and to provide a dispute resolution service for tenants and landlords. In 2019, the RTB was given additional powers to regulate the rental sector. This includes an investigations and sanctions unit with the power to investigate tenancy agreements – with or without a formal complaint – and the power to caution or sanction landlords if they do not meet their obligations as a landlord.

“Areas of interest which the Committee might wish to examine include the RTB’s development and maintenance of its database of landlords; the exchange of data on private residential tenancies between the RTB and other State bodies, including in relation to the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP); the standard of rental accommodation; processing times for mediation and adjudication; and the RTB’s new Tenancy Management System. The Committee looks forward to discussing these areas, the funding and resourcing of the RTB, and related matters with the representatives of the RTB.”

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

PAC is a standing committee of Dáil Éireann which focuses on ensuring public services are run efficiently and achieve value for money. Further information on the role and remit of the Committee can be found here.
