Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment to discuss fuel costs with the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission

22 Mar 2022, 13:46

The Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment will meet tomorrow, Wednesday March 23rd to discuss fuel cost issues and pricing practices relating to fuel.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House between 9:30-12:30.

The Committee will hear from Chairperson of the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) Jeremy Godfrey. The CCPC is the statutory body responsible for promoting compliance with, and enforcing, competition and consumer protection law in Ireland.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Maurice Quinlivan said: “Tomorrow is a welcome opportunity to discuss the historic rise in fuel prices with the consumer watchdog. The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has previously stated fuel companies have no obligation to pass on cuts to excise duty or reductions to VAT to customers."

“Despite the cuts to excise duty announced earlier this month, many filling stations ate charging more than €2 per litre and this may rise again in the coming months due to the war in Ukraine.”

“There have been calls for the CCPC to investigate alleged price-gouging by fuel companies and for members of the public to report cases of gouging by retailers.”

"We look forward to discussing these and other related matters tomorrow."
