Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage to discuss Planning and Provision of Housing for Older People, including Fair Deal

9 May 2022, 17:15

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 10 May, to discuss the Planning and Provision of Housing for Older People, including Fair Deal.

The meeting at 3pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will be split into two sessions to hear from key stakeholders.

  • 3pm-5pm – Officials from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and the Department of Health.
  • 5pm-6pm – Representatives of Age Action, Alone and Sue Ryder Foundation Ireland.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Steven Matthews said: “Over the next two decades, it is expected the number of people in Ireland aged 65 and over will make up around one in five of our population. This will have major implications across all areas of public policy, including housing, health and long-term care. It is critical that we begin planning for this now.

“In our first session the Committee will discuss these issues and related matters with officials from government departments at the heart of policy planning, development and implementation, while in our second session we will hear from key stakeholders who provide advice and support to older people across a wide range of areas, including housing and long-term care.”

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
