Committee to discuss the EU’s response to the humanitarian crisis caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine with Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney

5 Jul 2022, 14:51

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will meet on Wednesday July 6th discuss the EU’s response to the humanitarian crisis caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine with Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence, Simon Coveney TD.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House between 09:30-12:30.

Speaking ahead of the meeting Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Joe McHugh said: “We welcome the opportunity to hear from the Minister regarding the EU’s response to the humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Ukraine. Minister Coveney recently travelled to Strasbourg as part of Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of Europe and discussed how to reinforce democratic security across Europe in the wake of Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

“A delegation from the Committee on European Affairs have visited Romania and Poland and Georgia  - countries that have taken in tens of thousands of people fleeing from Ukraine. During the fact finding mission, Members held high level meetings with political representatives and visited refugee camps to learn more about how these countries are responding to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.”

We look forward to discussing the Council of Europe’s revised Action Plan for Ukraine, the geopolitical impact of the conflict and how Ireland and the EU can seek to address the humanitarian and global food security crisis that has being exacerbated by Russia’s actions.”
