Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform and Taoiseach to discuss Summer Economic Statement with Irish Fiscal Advisory Council

12 Jul 2022, 17:40

The Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform and Taoiseach will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, 13 July, to discuss the Summer Economic Statement with representatives from the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council (IFAC) led by its Chairperson, Mr Sebastian Barnes.

Speaking ahead of the meeting at 1.30pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House, Committee Cathaoirleach, Deputy John McGuinness, said: “The Summer Economic Statement (SES), which was published last week, sets out the Government’s medium-term budgetary strategy, establishes the parameters for discussion around Budget 2023 and details the revenue and expenditure policy objectives of Government. The Fiscal Advisory Council is mandated to assess the official budgetary forecasts produced by the Department of Finance, and whether the fiscal stance of the Government is conductive to prudent economic and budgetary management.

“However, while IFAC is not mandated to assess the macroeconomic forecasts in the Summer Economic Statement, its commentary provides an important independent view to the report that will assist the Committee. The Committee looks forward to discussing this latest summer statement with Mr Barnes and his colleagues and hearing their commentary ahead of Budget 2023.”

The Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform and Taoiseach has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
