Dublin MEPs to address Seanad Éireann on the theme of climate action and climate justice

Members of the European Parliament representing the Dublin constituency will address Seanad Éireann and participate in a discussion with Senators at 5pm tomorrow, Tuesday, September 20th.

The Seanad will be addressed by Barry Andrews MEP, Ciarán Cuffe MEP and Frances Fitzgerald MEP.   

Cathaoirleach of the Seanad Senator Mark Daly commented “Following on from former President of Ireland Mary Robinson’s launch of Seanad 100 and her call for the Seanad to take a lead role on climate action, Seanad engagement with MEPs over this term will focus on the theme of climate action and climate justice, including the EU response thereto.”

There will be opening statements from the MEPs and from the Leaders of the Seanad groups and their spokespeople followed by a question and answer session with the MEPs.


The proceedings shall commence at 5 p.m., shall not exceed 90 minutes, and shall consist of —
(a) a speech of welcome by the Cathaoirleach;(b) an opening address by each MEP which shall not exceed eight minutes in each case;
(c) a contribution not exceeding three minutes by a spokesperson from each Group;
(d) a single response not exceeding three minutes by each MEP to the combined issues raised by the Group spokespersons;
(e) questions from all other Senators in accordance with the sequence set out in the Schedule to this resolution, which shall not exceed one minute in each case, and a reply not exceeding two minutes from each MEP;
(f) a final concluding statement of not less than six minutes by each MEP;
(g) a speech of thanks by the Leader of the House;
and the members of the European Parliament may take seats on the floor of the Seanad Chamber.

Frances Fitzgerald is a Fine Gael MEP. She is a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality.

Ciarán Cuffe is a Green Party MEP. He is a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and the Committee on Transport and Tourism.

Barry Andrews is a Fianna Fáil MEP. He is a member of the Committee on International Trade, the Delegation to the EU-UK Parliamentary Assembly and Delegation for relations with South Africa.
