Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform and Taoiseach to discuss Politically Exposed Persons with Departments of Justice and Finance

4 Oct 2022, 16:00

The Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform and Taoiseach will meet at 1.30pm tomorrow, Wednesday, 5 October, for a discussion on Politically Exposed Persons with officials from the Department of Justice and the Department of Finance.

Speaking ahead of the meeting in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy John McGuinness said: “Politically Exposed Persons are defined as individuals who are or have been entrusted with a prominent public function, and who due to their position and influence, potentially can be abused for the purpose of committing money laundering offences and related offences, including corruption and bribery, as well as conducting activity related to terrorist financing.

“The Committee is examining this matter in the context of Anti-Money Laundering measures and will hear evidence on how measures are applied, the obligations on organisations to apply those measures, the implications of such measures and future measures such as the development of the EU Money-Laundering Authority. Members look forward to a wide-ranging engagement with the officials from Justice and Finance.”

The Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform and Taoiseach has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
