Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform and Taoiseach to discuss Defective Concrete Block Levy with stakeholders and Government officials

25 Oct 2022, 15:00

The Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform and Taoiseach will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, 26 October, to discuss the Defective Concrete Block Levy with key stakeholders.

The meeting at 1.30pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will hear from representatives from the Society of Chartered Surveyors of Ireland (SCSI), the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) and the Mica Action Group, and officials from the Department of Finance, the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, and the Revenue Commissioners.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy John McGuinness said: “The Defective Concrete Block Levy was introduced by the Minister for Finance in Budget 2023 to raise revenue towards meeting the costs of remediation of homes affected by defective concrete blocks. However, the proposed concrete block levy has caused considerable public and political concern, in particular that the cost may negatively impact house buyers. The Committee believes this is a matter of public interest and looks forward to discussing the issue with our stakeholders and discussing the technicalities of the levy with Government officials.”

The Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform and Taoiseach has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
