27 Oct 2022, 09:00

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will meet today, Thursday, October 27th to continue its series of engagements with architects of the Good Friday Agreement.

US Senator George Mitchell will address the meeting remotely to discuss his role as one of the architects of the Good Friday Agreement.

Senator Mitchell was the first Special Envoy for Northern Ireland appointed in 1995 by President Bill Clinton and played an instrumental role in building the cross-community consensus vital to achieving the Good Friday Agreement.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House between 13:30 - 16:30.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Fergus O’Dowd said: “We look forward to continuing our series of meetings with architects of the Good Friday Agreement. This week we have Former US Senator Majority Leader George Mitchell, who responding to the inspired nomination of US President Clinton agreed to participate as Co-Chairman and he expertly co-chaired the all party talks. Senator Mitchell was hugely influential in ensuring the ultimate success of this historic peace deal, which is a permanent tribute to his unrivalled skill and ingenuity and personal commitment to peace in our land."

The Committee has already heard from Bertie Ahern, Mark Durkan, Lord Alderdice, Jonathan Powell and Tim O’Connor.

It will continue to meet with a range of people involved in the negotiations, including the politicians involved, diplomats and civil servants in the coming term.
