22 Nov 2022, 14:45

The Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment will meet on Wednesday November 23rd for a discussion on the challenges facing the technology sector.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 between 09:30-12:30.

  • The following representatives are due to appear:
  • Director of Technology Ireland - Una Fitzpatrick
  • Head of Digital Policy, Ibec - Erik O’Donovan
  • Interim CEO of IDA Ireland - Mary Buckley
  • Divisional Manager Technology, Content Consumer and Business Services - IDA Ireland - Donal Travers
  • Department Manager Strategic Policy - IDA Ireland - Tommy Fanning

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Maurice Quinlivan said: “We welcome the opportunity to discuss the current challenges facing the technology sector given the current spate of job losses at Meta, Stripe and Twitter.”

“While Ireland remains at the heart of the technology industry in Europe and is a place to do business, multinational companies must be mindful of their legal responsibilities regarding collective redundancies and must comply with Irish employment laws."

“While the global slowdown in the technology sector has been flagged, Ireland is particularly exposed due to the number of companies who have their EU headquarters here.”

“Looking ahead, we must focus on our indigenous tech companies, remaining attractive to competitors across the EU and focusing on strategies that will safeguard and attract more jobs.”

“We look forward to discussing these and other related matters with representatives.”
