Good Friday Committee to hear from former taoiseach John Bruton

7 Dec 2022, 16:52

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will meet on Thursday, December 8th to continue its series of engagements with architects of the Good Friday Agreement.

Former taoiseach John Bruton will address the meeting to discuss his role as one of the architects of the Good Friday Agreement.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House between 13:30 - 16:30.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Fergus O’Dowd said: “We look forward to continuing our series of meetings with architects of the Good Friday Agreement. This week we have former taoiseach and former Fine Gael leader John Bruton who will discuss his role in the Northern Ireland peace process in the years leading up to the Good Friday Agreement.”

“Given the current negotiations regarding the Northern Ireland Protocol and the political vacuum in Northern Ireland due to lack of an up and running Assembly at Stormont, we look forward to hearing Mr Bruton’s views on the future of the Good Friday Agreement.”

The Committee has already heard from Bertie Ahern, George Mitchell, Mark Durkan, Lord Alderdice, Jonathan Powell and Tim O’Connor.

It will continue to meet with a range of people involved in the negotiations, including the politicians involved, diplomats and civil servants in the coming term.
